gripes.
There are too many pieces in one room at most museums. I understand why this is necessary on a logistical level, but I think Carol Duncan would agree with me when I say that the experiential should be prioritized over the logistical in these situations. It’s just overwhelming to have too many works in your line of vision. It gives me anxiety…okay, extremely low-grade anxiety...

Trust Art: A Stock Market for Art Projects →
So many aspects of this project leave a bad taste in my mouth, especially this:
“At the end of the year, the artwork gets auctioned off, at a price set by the combined social capital of all its investors.”
The suggestion that the value of an artwork is or should be determined by the social standing of the people who support it…that may very well be the case in the current art...

I just e-mailed Chuck Schumer to let him know he’s on my list of undesirables at the moment. You should too. Click here to learn more about the Coburn Amendment (it prevents any money from the stimulus bill from going to museums, theatres, and art centers [among others]) and to send your own letters to your senators. There’s still a chance for the language to be changed in the final...

Noah Birksted-Breen: Russian theatre is on the... →
This is very interesting: Theatre is one of the few (only?) mediums in Russia yet to be infiltrated by Putin’s regime…as a result, young Russian playwrights have been churning out politically-charged plays that overtly challenge the current administration. Noah Birksted-Breen writes that theatre is “the sole public medium in Russia where total freedom of expression still exists”. He theorizes...

There will be nine grants awarded, two of which will be selected by Rhizome’s membership through an open vote (democracy in action!) Additional info below, full...
