The Beholder: a marketplace for artists
The Beholder is another one of my favorite websites for purchasing or pining away after art. Like 20x200, The Beholder showcases and sells the work of emerging artists, but their format is a little closer to structure of a traditional art gallery…but only a little.
As for this particular piece by Mike Monteiro, I am somewhat ambivalent about it, which keeps me coming back to it because each time I do I think I might draw some determinate conclusion. Here is how it usually goes in my head: I appreciate the sentiment (it is one of my favorites things to complain about lately), it reminds me of Jarvis Cocker, but it’s not as clever as Jarvis (is it sacrificing depth for impact?), but an argument could definitely be made for some conceptually redeeming qualities which would reveal more depth…I’ll come back to it.
