Led Zeppelin’s Jones jams with Sonic Youth for dance score | Music | guardian.co.uk
One of the trends in the arts that has been exciting me recently is a lot of unexpected cross-genre/cross-discipline/cross-media collaborations and crossovers. Even when I haven’t enjoyed the final product, I still appreciate and support the principle of it. Damon Albarn and Rufus Wainwright penning operas, Anthony Minghella and William Kentridge directing operas, Duncan Sheik scoring a Broadway musical…I’m sure I’m forgetting some good ones (as well as some non-musical theatre related ones…). This one seems particularly promising: the bassist from Led Zeppelin along with Sonic Youth will perform a work by mixed-media sound composer Takehisa Kosugi for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (who also performed to the accompaniment of Radiohead and Sigur Ros in 2003).
Merce Cunningham At 90 takes place April 16-19 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (where so many exciting experimental performances take place). Tickets start at $25
