Zhang Hongtu, Long Live Chairman Mao Series #29, 1989, Acrylic and Quaker Oats box 24.4 x 12.7 x 12.7 cm
I went to see the exhibit “The Revolution Continues: New Art From China” today at the recently (re)opened Saatchi Gallery. I was wary…I’ve seen a lot of contemporary Chinese art lately (‘tis de riguer) and recently helped plan an exhibition of it. But I really enjoyed this—the space is one of the best exhibition spaces I’ve seen and it is utilized really well. The show was well curated and definitely placed quality above quantity. I want to blog on some of the more impressive pieces later (the sculptures and installations were the highlights), but I need some time to process them before I can put my thoughts into coherent written form. So until then, here is Quaker Oats Mao (uh, my pet name for it, not the real title), who made me smile.
