The Phantom of the Opera is getting a sequel. I think, for the most part, that Andrew Lloyd Webber produces ridiculous shlock (Phantom of the Opera included). I will sheepishly admit that there are a few songs in his oeuvre that I count among my (very) guilty pleasures. I remember my grandparents went to see Cats on Broadway in the 80’s and got up and walked out in the middle of the performance. Anyway, my point…I was wondering, because I don’t know, what sort of precedent is there for sequels to musicals? I can’t think of any off the top of my head. It seems a fairly likely possibility that this will not live up to people’s expectations and the fanatical devotees of the original will be sorely disappointed.
